Interpretation skills of secondary school students on geometric structures constructed with unit cubes

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to determine the skills of secondary school students to understand geometric structures connected with unit cubes and to study the relationship between secondary school levels and gender and work to determine strategies used. By this purpose, in this research it is used to case study from quartive methods and casual comparision method in qualitive methods. 186 fifth grade, 141 sixth grade, 208 seventh grade and 208 eight grade totally 743 students in secondary school in Pendik district of İstanbul in 2018 – 2019 academic year attended to the quantitive part of the study. In the qualitative part, a total of 8 students participated in the program, of which 4 were from the fifth grade level and 4 were from the eighth grade level. The quantitative data were obtained by the "Unit Cube" test developed by the researcher. Qualitative data were obtained by unstructured interviews. In the analysis of the quantitative data, Kruskall Wallis and Mann - Whitney U tests, which are non - parametric tests, were used for comparison of achievement between mean, frequency, class and gender. Descriptive analysis was used in the analysis of qualitative data. In the results of the research, it can not be founded that secondary school students "unit cube" test success scores a significant difference between genders. According to Mann Whitney – U test's result in the binary comparisons of total score and chapter score's averags; it result that there isn't an important difference levels between 5 – 6 class levels and 7 – 8 class. But it results that there is a sensitive difference between 5 and 7 class levels, and 6 and 8 levels, and 5 – 8 class levels. Also it's been seen that students forgot to count increased unit cubes when counting unit cubes and students expressed rectangular prism structures formed with unit cubes as a cube.
