Investigation of personality characteristic of secondary school students according to sport branches

Abstract (EN)
In this study, it is aimed to examine the difference between the students' sport branches and the personality characteristics of those who take education at secondary school and take part in team sports. The sample has been comprised of 429 sportsman students, including 190 female and 239 male students who attend secondary school and take part in team-sports during 2013 – 2014 academic year in Osmaniye. The methods for collecting data were personal information forms and Basic Personality Traits Inventory (BPTI) (Gençöz and Öncül, 2012). The results of the study shows that in general; the responsibility, extraversion and agreeableness subscales are in high levels, openness to experience, neuroticism and negative valence subscales are in average levels. When the basic personal characteristics of students were examined according to the value of gender; female students had higher scores only in extraversion subscale than male students. Nevertheless; no significant difference was found in responsibility, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness to experience, and negative valence subscales according to the value of gender. When the basic personal characteristics of students were examined according to the values of class; a significant difference was found in extraversion, neuroticism, responsibility and openness to experience subscales. On the other hand, no significant difference was found in negative valence, agreeableness subscales according to the value of class. When the basic personal characteristics of students were examined according to the value of sport age; a significant difference was found in extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism subscales. On the other hand, no significant difference was found in responsibility, openness to experience and negative valence subscales according to the value of sport age. When the basic personal characteristics of students were examined according to the sport branches; there were significant differences in all subscales. According to that, it was detected that extraversion levels of the students who took part in football branch were lower than the levels of the students who took part in handball, basketball, and volleyball branches. Furthermore, it was seen that extraversion levels of the students who took part in handball branch were lower than the levels of the students who took part in basketball and volleyball branches. Moreover; it was found that the responsibility levels of the students who took part in volleyball branch were lower than the levels of the students who took part in football branch. In addition; it was detected that the agreeableness levels of the students who took part in football branch were higher than the levels of the students who took part in basketball and handball branches. On the other hand; it was detected that the neuroticism levels of the students who took part in football branch were lower than the levels of the students who took part in basketball, volleyball and handball branches. Besides the neuroticism levels of the students who took part in basketball branch were higher than the levels of the students who took part in volleyball branch. It was found that openness to experience levels of the students who took part in basketball branch were higher that the levels of the students who took part in volleyball branch. It was detected that negative valence levels of the students who took part in basketball branch were higher than the levels of the students who took part in handball, football, and volleyball branches.
