Antalya prison in late term of Ottoman State

The effects of Prison Reform process on Antalya Prison that occured in the late 19th century is detected in the thesis that carries the name of "Antalya Prison in late Ottoman Empire." We may accept the Works written about prisons as a main source such as Gültekin Yıldız's "Mapusane" and also the book named "Hapishane Kitabı" which is a compilation of articles under the editorship of Emine Gürsoy Naskali and Hilal Oytun Altun. There are many articles written on the subject. Ali Rıza Gönüllü's "Isparta Prison in the Late Ottoman Empire (1867-1920)" and Nurgül Bozkurt's "General Situation of Kütahya Prison in Early 20th Century" takes place among these articles. Besides that there are also thesis written on the subject. Ufuk Adak's "Prison in the city of Aydın in the Late 19th and early 20th Centuries" and Nazmiye Akbey's "Sinop Prison in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries" are also important. Our thesirs that we reviewed Antalya Prison includes three chapters. In the first section, besides how crime appeared in the first place and how it developed, there are also informations given about the consept of crime, punishment and prison an how these consepts developed during the time starting with the history of Islam and further with the Ottoman Ampire. It is also mentioned about the prisons in Europe and various models that are created. Furthermore, the consepts of crime, punishment and prison are analyzed from the stand point of Ottoman Empire. The crimes of hadd (penalty given by sharia), ta'zir (penalties that are applied by the Islamic Law fort he crimes that have no certain punishments when they are commited) and talion are tried to be stated benefited from the history of Islam by giving the depictions and investigating how the perpetrators of these crimes are punished. Since the Islamic Law is the base of the legislation of Ottoman Empire, the bound between them is undeniable. Later on, changes in the concept of punishment in Tanzimat Reform Era are evaluated from the stand point of Penal Laws that are enacted in 1840,1851 and 1858. Then, the reforms that are made in the name of prisons in Ottoman Empire took place in the theses. In the second section, brief information is given about the city of Antalya which is the city where the prison stands. Then the informations about the location of the prison and the rebuilding process of the prison stands. Then the informations about the location of the prison are mentioned benefited from the sources of archives. The repairing process of the prison, its expansion, the constructions of the additional rooms and also theconstructions of gasilhane (the place where dead people are washed before funeral), washroom fort he inmates are also mentioned. Right after, the problems that occured and the matter of appointment are mentioned in detail. Lastly, the governing body of the prison, their wages and appointment issues are evaluated. In the third section, in the light of the documents we accessed, the inmates of the Antalya prison are tried to be dealt with in all its parts.
