The use and spread of bicycle in the Ottoman public spaceand the social life

This study aims to examine the adoption and spread of the bicycle in the social life and public space in the Ottoman lands. The widespread use of the bicycle invented in the first quarter of the 19th century in the Ottoman lands took place in the last quarter of the same century. The bicycle revolutionizing the field of personal transportation and becoming an object of modernity and women's liberation became an actor of races, recreational activities and domestic travels in the Ottoman social life, and became a tool used in official institutions with its inclusion in security organizations. The adoption and spread of the bicycle in the mentioned areas in the Ottoman lands were examined by considering the period's magazines and newspapers, archival sources, domestic and foreign literature.
