Adaptation of oxford cognitive screen into Turkish: validity and reliability study in stroke patients

The efficiency of the treatment and rehabilitation process is highly dependent on the assessment of cognitive impairments in both stroke and aphasia. The tests used in our country have several disadvantages in terms of scope and user limitations for this purpose. Therefore, the adaptation of the 'Oxford Cognitive Screen [OCS[', a cognitive assessment test, into Turkish, as well as validity and reliability studies, were carried out in this study. The correlation between cognitive skills and other related factors, in individuals with aphasia, was also studied. The study included 114 stroke survivors and 92 healthy people. Data collection process was completed using the 'Participant Information Form, Oxford Cognitive Screening Test (TR), Aphasia Language Assessment Test, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test, Barthel Activities of Daily Living Index' and 'Hamilton-Beck Depression Tests'. Within the scope of validity analyses, content-structure-criterion validity; within the scope of reliability internal consistency-objectivity-stability-equivalence analyses were performed. The link between the OCS-TR scores of the relevant participant group and age, gender, education, damaged hemisphere, ADD-HAM-D scores, onset time, aphasia type, smoking-alcohol usage, physical-social activity, and reading habits. While education, age, damaged hemisphere, aphasia, ADD and HAM-D scores were found to have a significant relationship with most OCS-TR subtest scores, gender, onset time, aphasia type, cigarette-alcohol use, physical-social activity, and reading habit factors seemed to have no or rare relationship with few OCS-TR subtest scores. The OCS-TR scale is considered to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing cognitive abilities in individuals who have had a stroke.
