The effect of summarisation skill instruction on university English preparatory class students' reading comprehension and metacognitive awareness of reading strategies

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of summarisation skill instruction on university English preparatory class students' reading comprehension and metacognitive awareness of reading strategies. In this mixed-methods research design, quantitative research methods, a pretest-posttest control group quasi experimental study model, and qualitative data to determine student views were employed. The research was conducted in the 2019-2020 academic year with the participation of 117 students studying in the English Preparatory Program at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University School of Foreign Languages. In this study, an "English Reading Comprehension Test" prepared by the researcher was used to identify the students' level of English reading comprehension. A "Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory" (MARSI) designed by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) and adapted to Turkish by Öztürk (2012) was used to determine student level of metacognitive awareness of reading strategies. Lastly, reflection papers prepared by the researcher were used to clarify students' views on summarisation instruction. The data obtained from the research was analysed using an SPSS 21 program. The Independent Sample t-test was used in the analysis of quantitative research data while analysis of the qualitative data was done by contect analysis technique. The research results revealed that summarisation skill instruction had no meaningful effect on student level of reading comprehension nor metacognitive awareness of reading strategies. However, after examining student statements, it was understood that most of the students noticed contributions to their development of summarisation skills and to their personal awareness about summary writing after receiving summarisation instruction.
