Algorithmic surveillance in the context of freedom and security

With the proliferation of digital technologies, surveillance and control processes have expanded into wider domains, leading to the emergence of new threats. Digital surveillance processes are based on the collection of large amounts of data from individuals' online activities, the analysis of this data, and its utilization for specific purposes. In the digital age, where algorithms increasingly shape various domains, a new form of domination is emerging through these technological structures. In this context, "algorithmic surveillance" is regarded as a new tool of control and discipline in contemporary societies. Algorithms have evolved beyond being merely technical instruments; they have become forces that shape human behavior, influence preferences, limit decision-making freedom, and threaten personal security. Furthermore, algorithms have transformed into tools that exert social, political, and economic control over individuals. This study aims to reveal how people are surveilled in the digital society, how their data is collected, how they are subjected to pressure and manipulation, and the implications of these processes for their freedom and security. The research was conducted using qualitative methods and a literature review, and it critically examines the emergence and functioning of algorithmic surveillance, along with its impact on freedom and security, within a theoretical framework. The study investigates how algorithmsnow one of the defining elements of the digital ageconstruct a mechanism of domination, how this mechanism operates, and its effects on individuals, through a theoretical and critical lens. It has been determined that algorithms have significant effects on freedom and security across various domains.
