Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Investigation of Saliva Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Individuals with Peri-Implant Diseases AIM Although oxidative stress is known to play an important role in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis, data on how it affects peri-implantitis is limited. The aim of this study is; To examine salivary TAS and TOS levels and OSI proportional value in peri-implant disease and peri-implant healthy individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 64 patients (number of implants; 266) were included in the study, including 24 peri-implantitis (implant number; 124), 20 peri-implant mucositis (implant number; 100), and 20 peri-implant healthy (implant number; 42). Following the measurements of clinical periodontal and peri-implant parameters, salivary TAS and TOS levels were measured. OSI was calculated with [(TOS / TAS) x100] and the data obtained were analyzed statistically. FINDINGS When the clinical periodontal and peri-implant parameters were evaluated, it was found that the highest values were in the peri-implantitis group and the lowest values were in the peri-implant health group (p <0.05). Saliva TAS and OSI values were not statistically different between groups (p> 0.05). On the other hand, salivary TOS values were higher in peri-implantitis group than peri-implant mucositis and peri-implant health (p <0.05). Significant positive correlations were found between clinical parameters and oxidative stress parameters in all groups (p <0.05). DISCUSSION In the peri-implantitis, salivary TOS levels increase without a significant change in saliva TAS levels. The findings of our study show that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathological mechanism of peri-implant diseases, as in periodontal diseases, and especially the salivary TOS level increases depending on the severity of the destruction in peri-implant diseases.
