Abstract (EN)

Although the findings that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases are now clearly demonstrated, there are limited data on the effect of oxidative stress mechanisms in peri-implant diseases. The aim of this study; is the examination of salivary SOD and MDA levels in individuals with peri-implant disease. A total of 64 individuals, including 24 with peri-implantitis, 20 with peri-implant mucositis, and 20 with peri-implant healthy, were included in our study. By measuring clinical periodontal and peri-implant parameters, salivary SOD and MDA levels were measured. Obtained measurement values were analyzed statistically. In all clinical periodontal and peri-implant parameters, the highest values were observed in the peri-implantitis group, and the lowest values in the peri-implant health group (p<0.05). When the salivary SOD values were analyzed, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups (p>0.05). On the other hand, salivary MDA values; It was found to be statistically significantly higher in the peri-implantitis group compared to the peri-implant mucositis group and in the peri-implant mucositis group compared to the peri-implant health group (p<0.05). Statistically significant positive and negative correlations were observed between clinical periodontal and peri-implant parameters and salivary SOD and MDA levels. The findings of our study; shows that oxidative stress plays a role in the pathological mechanism of peri-implant diseases as well as in periodontal diseases, and especially indicates that the level of MDA increases depending on the severity of peri-implant diseases.
