Evaluation of PAPP-A levels in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients

Abstract (EN)
Aim It is known that patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis due to CRF are jointly with subclinical inflammation. Although there are quite a number of studies about inflammatory markers on these patients, there are no adequate number of studies with PAPP-A which considered as a marker related with inflammatory process recently. The aim of this study was to evaluate the PAPP-A levels in patients treated with dialysis. Methods The study covers in total 90 samples where 30 of them were hemodialysis patients and the other 30 of them were peritoneal dialysis patients and the remaining 30 samples were the control group. Venous blood samples have been collected in order to obtain PAPP-A levels and biochemical parameters from the patients when they refered in hospital for the usual examination. Apart from PAPP-A other biochemical parameters have been studied immediately. In order to measure PAPP-A levels all blood samples have been centrifuged and stored at -80° C after seperation of serum. Samples have been warmed up to room temperature before the measurement of PAPP-A levels. Serum PAPP-A levels have been evaluated by Two-Site Immunoenzymatic Sandwich Assay method. Statistical analysis in this study was performed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 22.0 software package. Results PAPP-A levels in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients was significantly higher compared to the control group (p <0.05). However, it has been seen that PAPP-A levels have a negative correlation in the other parameters of the study group such as albumin, erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and calcium (p<0,001). We observed a positive correlation in between PAPP-A levels and Neutrophil / Lymphocyte ratio, ferritin and the dialysis duration (p<0,05). Also, we found statistically significant difference in calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, ferritin and albümin between the groups (p<0,001). There were no were no significant differences CRP levels averages (p>0,05). Conclusion As a result, PAPP-A levels in CRF patients undergoing dialysis treatment detected high. This situation was thought that could be as a result of subclinical inflammation in these patients. However, more studies are required to confirm these results.
