The effect of post-training telephone follow-up on anxiety and treatment compliance in individuals with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

This study was conducted to examine the effects of pre-discharge education and post-discharge telephone monitoring on anxiety and treatment compliance in patients undergoing PCI. The sample of the study consisted of 60 patients who underwent PCI in a foundation university hospital. All patients included in the study were given PCI training before the procedure. Tele-Nursing service was given to the training group once a week for one month after the procedure. Data on patients; Sociodemographic Characteristics were collected with the questionnaire, the State-Trait Anxiety scale and the Modified Morisky Treatment Adherence scale. The data were analyzed with the SPSS program. Chi-Square, Mann-Whitney U, Krusskal-Wallis and Spearman correlation tests were performed in the analyses. p<0.05 was considered significant in all analyses. It was determined that 80% of the patients participating in the study were male and 50% were 63 years old and over. No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of blood pressure and blood values of the training and control groups before and after the training (p>0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of the State-Trait Anxiety scale mean scores of the training and control groups (p>0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of the score distributions of the Morisky scale motivation and knowledge sub-dimensions of the education and control groups (p>0.05). A positive, weak and statistically significant relationship was found between pre-educational state and trait anxiety and pre-education Morisky scale sub-dimension Motivation (p<0.05). State-Trait Anxiety states of the training and control groups were found to be similar. The treatment compliance of the training and control groups was similar. A positive and significant relationship was found between anxiety and motivation, which is the sub-dimension of adherence to treatment.
