This study was conducted as a quasi-experimental (with a final test control group in non-randomized groups) design to determine the effect of pet therapy in type 1 diabetic children on pain that occurs during first insulin application. The population of the study consisted of children aged between 7-15 years who applied to the Child Endocrine Service at the Istanbul Univesity School of Health Sciences Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Education and Research Hospital between, April 2017 and December 2017. On the other hand, the sample consisted of a total of 60 (pet therapy=30; control=30) children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes who met the selection criteria at the time of study. The research findings were obtained using the Information Form, Application Registration Form, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R). Data were analyzed using Pearson Chi-square test, t test, Kolmogorow-smirnow test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, Mann Whitney U test and ICC analysis. In power analysis with 5% alpha error margin, the power of the study was found 99,9%, effect size was found 1.36 (large effect) (G*power 3.1.9.2). As a result of the study, there was no significant difference between the gender, number of siblings, age of diagnosis of diabetes and age average of children in the pet therapy and control group (p>,05); it was found that there was a significiant difference according to the education level of the mothers, mothers of high school graduated in the pet therapy group and mothers of primary school graduated in the control group (p<,05). It was determined that the main of pain points of the children in the pet therapy group (VAS= 1,13±1,36 points, FPS-R= 1,07±1,34 points) was significantly lower than those in control group (VAS=4,50±3,24 points, FPS-R= 4,67±3,12 points) (p<,001). As a consequence, it was determined that pet therapy was effective in reducing the pain of children during insulin application.
