Determination of usage characteristics of phyrophyllite in ceramic bodies

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, physical and chemical properties of phyrophyllite raw material were determined and the usability of phyrophyllite as ceramic raw material was examined with the acquired data. With experimental studies, three formulations were prepared. Experimental studies of the formulations prepared by using of phyrophyllite, investigated whether phyrophyllite is an appropriate material to be used in ceramic body. Results showed that, phyrophyllite, as a raw material, may have use as an additive in preperation of ceramic mud pouring and may be an alternative of quartz with its high silica content and of kaolin in terms of its chemical content.Conducting XRD, XRF, EDX analysis, SEM microphotographs, grain size distribution analysis, dry, baking and total shrinkage, density and water absorption values, porosity, compression test, thermal expansion coefficient, BET Surface Area and usage in oven at 800, 900, 1000 and 1100 C° temperatures were utelized to characterize the phyrophyllite both structurally and functionally.Given the low cost of phyrophyllite, production of phyrophyllite containing ceramic may prove economical. Due to its comparatively low strength, it was determined that during raw material preparation phyrophyllite can be an provide energy and time saving product, due to its specific white baking color and high temperature resistance.With the use of speedy pouring phyrophyllite, the production speed of ceramic may increase significantly. Because ceramic materials high in phyrophyllite are extremly white and significantly resistant to every corrosive effects, increase of phyrophyllite usage in terms of final product quality may provide a significant added value.
