The effects of cardiovascular surgery with and without pump, on the post-operative complications and the length of stay in hospital

We aimed to reveal the effects of cardiovascular surgery on early stage complications and the length of stay in hospital among the patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery with and without pumpIt is possible to see many complications in this field because of high mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular surgery and anaesthesia. As it has not been done a study which compares cardiovascular surgery types in points of postoperative complications, the events which are mostly related with these complications, identification of the factors that contribute to these relationships and the effect of stay duration in hospital on the rate of these complications, we planed to clarify this subjectWe planed a prospective study. For this purpose 60 suitable patients aged between 40 and 85 who were admitted to Suleyman Demirel University Research and Practise Hospital Cardiovascular Surgery and Anaesthesia Unit were included in our study. 30 of these patients underwent cardiovascular surgery with pump and other 30 of them underwent cardiovascular surgery without pumpThe forms which contain personal information were applied to patients. All these evaluations were done under written permission of the hospital and the patientsAs a result of this study the distributions of age, sex, length and weight were found similar. The durations of anaesthesia, surgery and total intubations were found shorter in the group underwent cardiovascular surgery without pump. Decreased blood transfusion requirement and low CVP levels were defined in the group underwent cardiovascular surgery without pumpWhen we evaluated the postoperative complications; atrial fibrillation, hypertension, acute renal failure, oliguria, dyspnoea, low saturation levels, bleeding, revision operations and postoperative wound infections were found less in the group underwent cardiovascular surgery without pumpTotal length of stay in hospital which includes duration of stay in intensive care unit and cardiovascular service were found shorter in the group underwent cardiovascular surgery without pumpAs a result; cardiovascular bypass surgery without pump has the advantages such as decreased usage of blood and blood products, the short duration of stay in hospital and intensive care, low costs and low rates of morbidity and mortality. In this research it is seen that the bypass technique without pump is at least as reliable as the bypass technique with pump and its outcomes are satisfactory.
