Evagrius of Pontus and his view of ascetism

Evagrius of Pontus is an ascetic who has lived in the fourth century. Besides being an ascetic, he is a theoretician and a prolific writer. By integration of the teachings of Origen with Platonism, he laid the groundwork for Christian asceticism. Evagrius stepped into the ascetic life with the encouragement of Melania whom he met in Jerusalem. He went to the Egyptian desert to guide the novice hermit and became one of the leading names of asceticism. Although he did not meet Origen in person, Evagrius is the person who understood and taught his teachings the best. Evagrius developed his doctrines in accordance with the teachings of Origen. Therefore he was condemned and his work destroyed or recognized under other names. In his works, the struggle against logismoi (thought) is at the central. Evagrius is the theoretician of these thoughts, which will be later known as the "Seven Great Sins". In addition, Evagrius is a versatile writer with works on hermit psychology, cosmology and eschatology. The purpose of this study is to revealdoctrine of asceticism of Evagrius of Ponticus. Evagrius's doctirne of asceticism is divided into two parts as practike an gnostike and the subject is quite extensive. There fore in the thesis the practical part is discussed.
