Evaluation of the use of artificial intelligence in the design of porcelain tableware

Today, design holds strategic importance for companies to stand out in a global competitive environment, maintain their identity, and adapt to technological advancements. In porcelain tableware, design enriches both the dining experience and aesthetic value. A harmonious dining atmosphere is shaped by the color, texture, form, and pattern design of the porcelain. Generating design alternatives plays a critical role in the design process by enabling designers to explore diverse ideas and approaches, thereby fostering innovative solutions. Developing alternative designs increases the likelihood of achieving aesthetically and functionally successful outcomes by avoiding adherence to a single concept. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers designers the ability to develop more accurate solutions tailored to design predictions, needs, and trends. This thesis aims to develop alternative porcelain tableware designs for both users and designers through the use of an artificial intelligence (AI) program. In this context, the Midjourney AI platform was utilized to generate design alternatives in a short time based on textual prompts. Initially, 12 primary designs were created, followed by 64 derivative designs generated from the original set. These designs were then evaluated by participants through a survey. The findings reveal that 76% of the participants considered the designs to be original. Additionally, interviews conducted with professional designers indicated that AI-generated designs significantly contribute to the processes of ideation and rapid development of alternatives. In conclusion, the study suggests that AI programs serve as effective tools in generating design alternatives and are expected to play a more prominent role in future design processes.
