Complications that develop in the recovery unit in early postoperative period

Objective: To assess the patients that resorted to our department?s recovery unit in terms of the type of anesthesia they received, their age, gender, ASA score and operation time and compare with the developing complications. Material and Method: The patients who had operations in our university hospital?s operating room and then were taken to the recovery unit were observed and the complications that developed were recorded. All the patients that were intubated postoperatively and refused to participate in the research were excluded from the study. In our study, patients? age, gender, the operation they had, the department that performed the operation, the duration of the operation, the type of anesthesia, and preoperative physical condition classification depending on American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) were recorded from their forms of anesthesia. Findings: In our study, the most common complication was pain. Pain was common in the ones that received general anesthesia whereas hypotension was common in the ones that received regional anesthesia. Pain was the most common complication in both genders however there was no correlation between complications and gender. Hypotension was the most common complication over the age 65. Hypotension was detected in very short surgical interventions, pain was detected in short and medium-length surgical interventions and shivering was detected in very long surgical interventions. Hypertension in ASAIII patients, hypotension in ASAII and pain in ASAI patients were seen more commonly. Conclusion: The most common complications seen in the patients that were taken to the recovery unit in our university hospital?s operating room were pain and hypotension.
