The predictive role of differentiaton of self and psychologicalflexibility in explaining dyadic adjustment in married andworking individuals

This study investigates the predictive role of differentiation of self and psychological flexibility in explaining dyadic adjustment among married and employed individuals. A total of 293 participants (193 women and 100 men) were recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Differentiation of Self Scale, the Psychological Flexibility Scale, and the Perceived Adjustment in Close Relationships Scale, along with a demographic information form. T-test, ANOVA, and regression analyses were conducted. Findings revealed that both differentiation of self and psychological flexibility significantly predicted marital adjustment and its subdimensions. Individuals with higher self-differentiation and greater psychological flexibility reported stronger relational satisfaction, better conflict resolution, and healthier communication. Results further indicated significant variations in marital adjustment based on demographic factors such as gender, education, and family type. The findings highlight the importance of fostering psychological flexibility and self-differentiation as protective factors for sustaining marital harmony, particularly for employed individuals balancing work and family roles. This study contributes to the literature by offering empirical evidence on the joint predictive value of these two constructs, with implications for counseling practices and premarital or marital education programs.
