Could visfatin level be a cardiovascular risk marker in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism?

Aim: Cardiovascular risk has been shown to be increased in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Visfatin is an important biomarker for endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between visfatin level and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with PHPT. Materials and Methods: Fourthy-three PHPT patients and 44 controls were included in our study. Serum samples for visfatin, hormone and cholesterol panel were obtained from PHPT patients and control group. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured using B-mode ultrasonography. Framingham risk score was calculated for the patient and control groups. Results: Serum visfatin levels were significantly higher in PHPT patients compared to the control group. was found to be significantly lower (p=0.019). PIMC was found to be lower in PHPT patients than in control group was significantly higher than the Framingham group (p<0.001). Framingham according to the risk score, as the risk increased in the control group, visfatin level was found to be significantly increased (p<0.001). However, in the PHPT group visfatin level increased with increasing risk, but there was no significant difference. was observed. As the corrected calcium level increased in both groups, visfatin level decreased and was found to be statistically significant (p=0.04). Only In the PHPT group, there was no significant correlation between calcium level and visfatin. no correlation was found. Conclusions: Visfatin is a known marker for CVD risk and is associated with CVD in PHPT. risk is known to increase. Therefore, an increase in visfatin level in PHPT can be expected.
