Abstract (EN)
This thesis examines the foundation myths of the ancient cities on the southern shores of the Propontis (Sea of Marmara). Drawing on a variety of sources, including ancient Greek and Roman literary works, epigraphic evidence, and coins minted by the cities, this research aims to reveal the mythological origins of the cities in the region and the political, economic and social changes they experienced over time. The study covers a time span from prehistoric times to the Roman Empire and explains in detail the Geographikal location of these cities, their colonisation processes and their interactions with neighbouring cultures. In addition, the impact of mythology on the identity formation of cities and the perspectives of ancient writers on this issue are also evaluated. The strategic and Geographikal position of the Hellespontos (Dardanelles) and the Propontis region is presented. The Geographikal location, historical development, foundation myths and the importance of the cities such as Kios, Priapos, Lampsakos, Parion, Kyzikos, Prokonnesos, Zeleia, Abydos, Miletopolis, Apollonia ad Rhyndacum, Prusa ad Olympum and Myrleia/Apameia, which are the focus of the thesis, are explained in detail. The role of colonisation in urbanisation in the region is also discussed and explained. In addition, the status of the cities under Persian and Roman rule, their commercial and strategic importance and the period of their abandonment are also emphasised.
