Özet (EN)

Purpose: To investigate the changing of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and intraocular pressure (IOP) after phacoemulsification surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES). Methods: Seven hundred and forty-nine patients who underwent phacoemulsification by the same surgeon at Dumlupinar University Department of Ophthalmology between November 2013 and May 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. One hundred and eighty-one patients were enrolled the study and divided into 2 groups: Patients with PES in group 1 (n=61), patients without PES in group 2 (n=120, control). The change between preoperative and postoperative BCVA and IOP were evaluated 1 day, 1 week and 1 month postoperatively. Results: Mean BCVA was increased and comparable in both groups significantly 1 day, 1 week and 1 month postoperatively (p<0.01). Mean BCVA was not statistically significant different between two groups in all follow-up period. Mean preoperative IOP was 17.51 ± 3.57 mmHg in group 1, and17.54 ± 3.82 mmHg in group 2 preoperatively. Mean IOP was increased slightly but not statistically significant in both groups (+1.08 ± 4.60 mmHg, p=0.071, and +0.08 ± 3.54 mmHg, p=0.797 respectively) at 1 day postoperatively. Mean IOP was decreased significantly at 1 week (-0.60 ± 2.83 mmHg, p=0.107, and -1.10 ± 2.60 mmHg, p<0.01 respectively), and at 1 month (-2.42 ± 2.50 mmHg, p<0.01, and -2.01 ± 2.69 mmHg, p<0.01 respectively) postoperatively. Mean IOP was not statistically significant different between two groups in all follow-up period. As intraoperative complications, zonular dialysis was observed 1 patient (1.6%) in group 1, and 1 patient (0.8%) in group 2. Conclusions: IOP tends to increase temporarily in the first day after cataract surgery in both PES and non-PES eyes. However, there was a significant decrease in both groups at the end of first month. Eyes with PES have a higher risk of complications for cataract surgery compared to normal eyes but complications rates are comparable and increase in visual acuity equally to normal eyes after surgery with experienced surgeons. Key words: phacoemulsification, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, pseudoexfoliation syndrome
