The effect of psoriasis treatment on body composition, components of metabolic syndrome and psoriatic arthritis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory immun mediated skin disorder with unknown etiology. The chronic inflammation in psoriasis have role in the development of metabolic and vascular disorders related with associating comorbidities. The comorbidities of psoriasis are listed as psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases, malignancy, pulmonary disease and depression. Recent studies have suggested a strong association exists between metabolic syndrome, obesity and complexity of the association between psoriasis, body mass index and psoriasis tratment. It is unclear whether or not drugs targeting inflammation and immunsuppression effect the risk or treatment of comorbidities. Biological agents that selectively block the immunologic steps implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis are a relatively new class of treament for psoriasis. Recently studies indicate the metabolic abnormalities associated with initiation of systemic treatment for psoriasis and the effects of anti-TNF therapy on the weight of patients.
