Comparison of the effect of inspiratory muscle training and traditional exercises in patients of breast cancer who received radiotherapy

Abstract (EN)
Breast cancer is the most common malign tumor among women in the world and accounts for about 30% of all cancers in women. In the researches, negative effects on respiratory functions and muscle strength of the radiation treatment have been observed. There are not enough studies on the effects of respiratory exercises in patients with breast cancer who received radiotherapy. The aim of this study is to examine comperatively the effect of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and traditional exercises in breast cancer patients who are receiving radiotherapy. Thirty breast cancer diagnosed patients, who had received radiotherapy within the last six months were included this study. Patients' demographic characteristics and medical histories were recorded. Pulmonary function tests and respiratory muscle strength were measured. Patients divided into two groups. Group 1 underwent aerobic exercise for 5 days per week and inspiratory muscle training with 30% resistance of the first maximal inspiratory pressure for 4 days per week for 6 weeks. Group 2 underwent aerobic exercise for 5 days per week and diaphraghmatic breathing exercise with pursed lip breathing for 4 days per week for 6 weeks. At the end of the study, in Group 1 statistically significant increase in FVC and MIP values was found (p <0,05). In Group 2, statistically significant increase in FEV1 values was detected (p <0.05). At the end of the treatment, FEF₂₅₋₇₅ value was found to be significantly higher in Group 1 than Group 2 (p<0,05). We found that, both IMT and diaphraghmatic breathing exercises have positive effect on pulmonary functions. On inspiratory muscle strenght we found that IMT is more effective than traditional exercises. We reccomend that IMT be included in the rehabilitation program in patients with breast cancer who are received radiotherapy. Key words: breast cancer, radiotherapy, inspiratory muscle training.
