Evaluation adhesion preventing effects of tranexamic acid (TA) and hyaluronate/carboxymethylcellulose barrier (HA/CMC) in the rat uterine horn models

Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate adhesion preventing effects of Tranexamic Acid (TA) and Hyaluronate/Carboxymethylcellulose Barrier (HA/CMC) in the rat uterine horn models on the basis of macroscopic and microscopic adhesion scores, and histopathological and as well as biochemical parameters of inflammation. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one female Wistar-Albino rats randomly divided into three grups were used. A standard injury was made on the uterine horns using bipolar cautery. Before closure of the abdomen,7 rats in the control group were administered intraperitoneally with 3 ml of saline. On the uterine horns of 7 rats were covered by a single layer of HA/CMC films. 2 ml of TA was applied on the uterine horns of 7 rats. On the 21st day after first surgery all of the rat evaluated. Results: There was no significant difference between TA group, HA/CMC group and the control group in terms of macro-adhesion score and micro-adhesion score (p=0,191 and p=0,092). No statistically significant difference was found between three groups in terms of inflammation score and inflammatory cell activity. SOD,GST activities and MDA levels did not significantly differ between TA group and HA/CMC group . SOD and GST activities in HA/CMC and TA group were found to be significantly lower than control group. MDA level in control group was statistically significantly lower than other groups . Conclusions: Our study does not indicate any benefits of TA and HA/CMC on the formation of macroscopic or microscopic adhesions. TA and HA/CMC have no effect on the severity of inflammation and inflammatory cell activity. TA increases the level of free radicals in applied tissues, and reduces the activities of SOD and GST enzymes that protect tissue from damage. Also HA/CMC reduces SOD and GST activities and increases MDA level in the individual tissues. More biochemical and pharmacological studies are needed in order to evaluate the effects of HA/CMC on the free radicals and antioxidant enzyme activities whether or not it is safe to utilize.
