8. SUMMARYThe effects of ascorbic acid on colonic anastomotic healing in rats(Dr. Fehmi CEYLAN)There exist a variety studies on factors effecting the healing of colonic anastomosis. Inaddition, the beneficial effect of many agents has been explored. Despite the fact that anumber of factors effect the healing of colonic anastomosis, the benefit of natural agents thatalter inflammatory process and healing is still a matter of debate. Given to the well-knownfunctions of ascorbic asit, it has been also verified as a stabilizing agent for collagen, andbalancing inflammation. In the present study, we have further investigated the effects of highand low dose ascorbic acid on colonic anastomotic healing.Thirty female Wistar rats were equally divided into three groups: Colonic anastomosisand intraperitoneal saline injection was performed for Group I (control: n=10). At the sametime, colonic anastomosis followed by seven days of ascorbic acid injection was done forgroup II (100 mg/kg), and III (200 mg/kg). In the end of 7 days, the rats were sacrificed.Anastomotic burst pressure was recorded. The anastomosis of the rats were harvested in orderto determine the hydroxyproline level and histologic parameters. Our findings indicated that all parameters concerning anastomotic strength was higherfollowinf 200 mg/kg ascorbic acid injection. Besides, 100 mg/kg injection was also found tobe beneficial according to the burst pressure and histological scoreIn conclusion, we postulate that 200 mg/kg injection, which can be regarded as highdose treatment, strongly supports anastomotic healing by increasing hydroxyproline level andinflammatory response. The augmented anastomotic burst pressure in group III is alsoestablishes our conclusion. High dose ascorbic acid administration beneficially effects colonicanastomotic healing
