Research of experimental intraabdominal adhesion prevention using honey and carboxymetylsellulos (seprafilm) in rats

Abstract (EN)

Intrabdominal adhesions are the fibrous bands between abdominal organs and the abdominal wall after the operation. It?s the serious cause of moralite and morbidity such as intestinal obstruction, infertility and chronic pelvic pain. Reoperations due to the adeshions have risks of complications. Each operation has higher risks than the one beforeRecently several studies have been performed in order to protect the adhesions. Up to now, no material that have full and complete effect over adhesion formation has been found.The aim of this study is to evaluate the postoperative adhesion preventive effect of honey which haas proven positve effect on wound healing and compare it with karbocymetylselulose (seprafilm) which is currently used barier in clinicla practice.This study is performed after the permission of Gazi, University Medi,cal Faculty Ethical Comity. Total 3 groups which is composed of 10 rats , total 30 Wistar-Albino rats were used. All rats were underwent adhesion model by clemping.Adhesion was scored from 0 to 4 as described by Mazuji et al. which is coposed of macroscopic adeshion scores. Histopathologic examination is performed by a scoring systeö from 0 to 3 as described by Hooker at el which is composed of fibrosis score and inflamation score.As a result; honey and seprafilm decreased the adhesion when used alone. But adhesion formaion in sprefilm usage was lower than the honey used ones. However as repğoted before, seprafilm was unable to protect the adhesşon between intestines. For this reason in order to protect the adhesions which can cause high mortality and morbity, further studies are needed.
