Abstract (EN)
Aim: Testicular torsion is an urologic emergency which requires immidiate intervention and it is frequent in pediatric and adolescent age group. In this study we aimed to determine the oxidative stress in the testis tissue after torsion biochemically and histopathologically and to analyse the effect of L-carnitine and meloxicame treatment in this injury.Materials and Methods: 30 wistar rats which weigh 250-300 gr were seperated to 5 groups and in each group there were 6 rats. 1st group was defined as the sham group, in the 2nd group torsion was performed, in the 3rd group rats were administered L-karnitine treatment in addition to the procedure performed in the 2nd group (500mg/kg/günIM), in the 4th group rats were administered meloxicame treatment in addition to the procedure performed in the 2nd group (3 mg/kg/günIM), and in the 5th group rats were administered meloxicame and L-karnitine treatment in addition to the procedure performed in the 2nd group.Results: When xantine oxidase values in two testes were compared in all groups xantine oxidase values were significantly higher in the left testes (p:0.006, p:0.004, p:0.006, p:0.004, p:0.004). MDA values in the torsion group were significantly higher when compared to L-carnitine, meloxicame and combined treatment groups (p:0.004, p:0.004, p:0.037). Cosentino score was significantly higher in the torsion group when compared to L-carnitine group (p:0.037). Similarly, Cosentino score was lower in combined treatment group when compared to torsion group but it wasn?t statistically significant. (p:0.657)Conclusions: Increase in the oxidative enzymes in lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation shows us that oxidative stress occurs in the target tissue after torsion. According to the results of this study we decreased oxidative stress in testis when we used L-carnitine and meloxicame treatments either seperately or as a combination. We think that new randomised, prospective, comprehensive and long-term studies are needed to use these treatment modalities in humans routinely
