Abstract (EN)

The Effects Of Cigarette Smoke Inhalation On Orthodontic Tooth Movement Aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cigarette smoke inhalation on orthodontic tooth movement in rats. Forty male Wistar-Albino rats, all aged 4 weeks, obtained from Karadeniz Technical University Surgical Research and Practice Center, as well as experimental procedures and animal care operations were conducted on the same center. We have seperated experimental animals into 4 groups randomly, all groups were including 10 animals. On control group, dental impressions were taken on 9th week, no further procedures applied. On force group, orthodontic force was applied after dental impression on 9th week. On cigarette group, inhalation procedure was started on 4th week. Inhalation procedure includes smoking of 10 cigarettes per time and 3 times per day. We have continued smoking procedure till 13th week. On cigarette and force group inhalation procedure was started on 4th week. Inhalation procedure includes smoking of 10 cigarettes per time and 3 times per day. We have continued smoking procedure till 13th week. On the 9th week, orthodontic force have been applied on this group until 13th week. At the end of the experimental period, all animals were sacrificed. Maxillas were isolated. Isolated maxillas and dental impressions were scanned with TRIOS 2014-1 intraoral scanning device and digital models were obtained. The data obtained from the digital measurements on the start and final models are statistically interpreted. Statistically significant difference observed when collected data of mean orthodontic tooth movement of groups compared to each other (p<0.05). When mean orthodontic tooth movement rates evaluated, force (p=0.01) and cigarette and force (p=0.01) groups showed statistically significant difference compared to control and cigarette groups (p<0.05). When mean orthodontic tooth movement rates evaluated between force and force+cigarette groups, there is statistically significant difference in favor of cigarette+force group. In conclusion, it was found that cigarette smoke inhalation increases the rate of orthodontic tooth movement in rats with this experimental setup.
