ABSTRACTManufacturing processes of composite materials have not been completely automated yetdue to the variations in material used and preparation of it. In this study, Resin TransferMolding (RTM) process is controlled by using two alternative sensor systems integrated witha mold, injection machine, data acquisition system, and mold filling simulations. Sincemechanical properties of finished part and its protection against ambient conditions areaffected by entrapped air in it, the mold must be completely filled with polymer. A sensorsystem is needed to monitor both mold filling and resin cure, so that the mold cavity is filledcompletely, and it can be decided when to open the mold and take the part out. First,thermocouple sensor systems were applied with some limitations on usage. The majordrawback of this system was high conductive heat loss from polymer to mold wall. As a betteralternative sensor system, voltage lineal sensors were studied and point voltage sensors weredeveloped capable of monitoring resin flow and cure. These sensors are low-cost, reliable,durable, and easy to manufacture.Another element of a robust control system is mold filling simulations. Accuratesimulation results can be obtained only if the input material data is accurate. A correctionscheme was introduced for the measurement of the permeability of bulk preform using non-perfect one-dimensional injection experiments. In addition, a model to calculate thepermeability of race-tracking channels was applied based on Stokes flow. The model wassolved by using finite difference method for different channel geometries.
