Agony of growing up i̇n Reha Erdem's cinema

Reha Erdem is considered to be one of the most unique directors in the recent history of Turkish Cinema. The language he chooses for his films differs from commercial cinema arguments. The growth process of the dominant characters as individuals can actually be viewed in his films. In the introductory part, every aspect of Reha Erdem's life and his films are summarized. Later on, the auteurist approach in his works are examined. In the main part, the hardships that the characters face while growing up and the social infrastructure created by them are analyzed. In the final part, the method of the thesis which is the 'Mirror Stage' theory by Jacques Lacan, is explained completely. The director's films are rediscussed according to the 'Mirror Stage' theory. The psycho-social structure of the characters is examined in the perspective of this theory. The effect that the director's characters have on the 'Mirror Stage' as individuals trying to grow up under the pressure of authority is found out and disclosed. This thesis is explained by the theme of "Growing Pains" in the films of Reha Erdem. It is stressed that Reha Erdem's directing should be appreciated in his films and also the importance of his films is thoroughly emphasized.
