A research on pictorial weavings and jacquard pictorial weaving applications inspired by phrygian legends

The aim of this study is to develop thematic fictional composition proposals based on Phrygian myths in light of the historical process of pictorial textiles and technological advancements, and to explore the possibility of interpreting these proposals on a Jacquard weaving loom. For this purpose, qualitative research methods and visual research techniques were employed to collect data. The literature review on Phrygian myths emphasized the cultural significance of these myths and highlighted the necessity of developing a new approach for incorporating them into textile design. Research in the YÖK database revealed that there has been no study focusing on the relationship between Phrygian myths and pictorial weaving, particularly with Jacquard textiles. Therefore, the adoption of Phrygian myths as the theme of the study and their interpretation through Jacquard weaving technique underscores the significance of this thesis. The research involved a comprehensive literature review on the historical process of pictorial textiles, their subjects, and Phrygian myths, which were chosen as the central theme of the study. Additionally, an on-site investigation in the Phrygian Valley in Eskişehir was conducted to examine the traces of Phrygian civilization and explore how the myths could be visually incorporated into design. Based on the gathered data, fictional compositions of pictorial textiles were created and woven on the Jacquard loom. The objectives of the research are to contribute to studies in the field of pictorial textiles, propose research-based pictorial weaving designs derived from a thematic concept, and present an academic research approach that will be useful for researchers, artists, and designers by making the findings accessible to them.
