Pathologic characteristics of treated primary liver cancer resection

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the fourth most common cancer around the world. In this study, factors that are effective in the etiopathogenesis (age, gender, HBV, etc.) with associations between the pattern of the tumour, tumour differentiation, lymphovascular invasion and prognostic factors were investigated.There were 82 cases with a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma between 2005-2010 at the Department of Pathology of Inonu University Faculty of Medicine. The histopathologic special subtypes, tumour differentiation, pattern of the tumour, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, capsul invasion, large vessel/portal vein invasion, presence of cirrhosis and dysplastic nodules, with age, gender distribution and etiology were reevaluated in hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained sections.The age of patients ranged from 11 to 76 years. There were 82 patients (11% female, 89% male). Chronic viral infection (HBV) is the most important cause of hepatocellular carcinoma, accounting for 73,1% of both males and females.43,9% of cases were well differentiated, 45% of cases were moderately differentiated, 9,7% of cases were poorly differentiated. Moderately differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma was most common in males, well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma was most common in females.One of the special subtype of hepatocellular carcinoma is fibrolameller carcinoma was seen only one case (1,2%).In order to give an idea on prognosis, in pathology reports of hepatocellular carcinoma greatest tumour dimension, differentiation, special subtypes, lymphovascular invasion, large vessel/portal vein invasion, presence of cirrhosis must be emphasized.Key Words: Hepatocellular carcinoma, fibrolameller carcinoma, cirrhosis, chronic viral infection, HBV
