A comprehensive study on Roland Dyens' musical language and the importance of ConcertoMaggio

In this thesis, a literature review has been conducted on the works of the French guitarist, composer, arranger, and improvisation master Roland Dyens. A comprehensive investigation has been carried out on Dyens' compositional language, with a structural analysis of ConcertoMaggio. Starting from the development of concertos in 20th-century guitar music, the concerto forms that emerged during that period are discussed. Subsequently, Dyens' musical character, his unconventional techniques, and the eclectic nature of his music are examined. Following a general characterization of Dyens's music, examples from his works are provided, and explanations regarding his compositional language are offered. The musical elements, techniques, and auxiliary materials used in his works are emphasized. The final section emphasizes the structural analysis of Dyens' composition ConcertoMaggio, exploring the innovative aspects within the Dyens triangle, a collaborative paradigm established by Ravel, Sor, and Piazzolla. The thesis delves into the emergence of novel elements resulting from this collaboration. Innovations introduced by Dyens in the concerto form are highlighted, and performance recommendations are shared in the concluding section of the thesis.
