Music in entertainment life of the Roman Civilisation

Throughout the history of civilization, humans have always sought to satisfy their souls after they have been able to feed themselves. Music, which has a deep-rooted place among the art forms created with this motive, has penetrated and still penetrates many areas of life. Rome, like other civilisations it interacted with, hosted music in its entertainment life, which is one of the important elements of the social structure. The character of the music used in these activities was always parallel to the theme of the entertainment. Although the Romans did not regard music as a respectable endeavour that a noble Roman could perform, they did not refrain from including it in their activities. As a matter of fact, the fact that they are not mentioned as the inventors of any of the instruments that exist today is a result of the mindset they had about music. Although he borrowed the instruments and musical performances he used from the surrounding civilisations, he ensured that these elements spread all over the Mediterranean empire he founded. This study aims to comprehend the role of music in the entertainment life of the Roman world between the 3rd BC and 4th AD in line with philological and archaeological data and to read Roman imperialism through music.
