Özet (EN)

In this study the issues 1-309 of the newspaper Sabah, which was published between 1876 and 1877, was examined and systematically indexed according to subjects. The editor and author of first 256 issues of Sabah, whose owner is a Greek called Papadopulos, was Şemseddin Sami who is a famous person with his works for Turkish Language and Literature. Sabah was closed for only once among 309 issues by the so called Press Management, but was forgiven after 10 days and continued publishing afterwards. The main aim of Sabah was to offer short news to its audience in order to not to be boring with an open and clear language for an affordable price and interrupted its publication twice because of financial problems. It is not known who was the editor of Sabah after Şemsettin Sami has left, but Papadopulos had remained as the owner. Publisher Mihran, who had an important role in the Turkish press history, remained as the director of Sabah until issue 123. We can find different sorts of information in Sabah like: the conditions, under which Ottoman Empire is, before the Russo-Turkish War (1877?1878); nationalist rebellions in Balkans, political relations between Ottoman Empire and European counties; the reasons which caused the war between Ottoman Empire and Russia and detailed information about other incidents. There are more than 14,000 items in the index and their short descriptions in a few sentences, and this provides a unique source to researchers who are willing to investigate the related period. In the last part of the work are the translations of the articles in the newspaper about art, polemics, critics, press, language and literature into Modern Turkish. The advertisements of the theatres and concerts showing the entertainment life of the related period are also added to the last part. Keywords: Şemseddin Sami, Sabah, Papadopulos, Russo-Turkish War, Press, Hersek Rebellion, Istanbul Conference.
