The evaluation of gender role attitudes of healthcare professionals and attitudes and approaches during health service delivery: Two hospital examples from the Eastern Black Sea and Aegean regions

This thesis aims to evaluate the gender role attitudes of healthcare workers and their attitudes and approaches during healthcare service delivery through two hospital examples from the Eastern Black Sea and Aegean Regions. It is a descriptive study conducted with 325 healthcare workers from Rize Kaçkar State Hospital (195) and Muğla Menteşe State Hospital (130). Gender Role Attitudes were measured using the TCRTÖ prepared by Zeyneloğlu. Attitudes and approaches during healthcare service delivery were determined by 16 case scenarios prepared by the researchers and possible approaches to these situations. Categorical variables were presented with numbers and percentages, and chi-square analysis was conducted. Descriptive findings were presented with numbers, means, standard deviations, medians, minimum, and maximum values since the distribution of numerical values did not meet parametric test conditions. Significance of the differences was obtained by Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance. Statistical significance value was taken as p<0.05. Healthcare workers in Muğla have a more egalitarian attitude than those in Rize. In both hospitals, women have a more egalitarian attitude than men. In Muğla, those with higher education (undergraduate and graduate), aged 33 and under, and with work experience of 4 years and under; in Rize, however, those who are single, live alone, and have 8 years or less of professional experience have significantly higher TCRTÖ scores. Healthcare workers in Rize have a more traditional attitude compared to those in Muğla. Responsibilities such as spouse, child, and elderly care, as well as family planning, are seen more as women's duties in Rize. Healthcare workers in the Eastern Black Sea Region have a more traditional gender role attitude compared to those in the Aegean Region. This is reflected in healthcare service delivery. Healthcare workers recognizing this is so important.
