Health workers' ageism level and perception of the attitudes of healthcare workers by elderly

One of the areas where ageism against aging is seen is the field of health. The discriminatory attitudes of health professionals towards elderly individuals and perceptions of these attitudes in the elderly individuals lead to various health problems in the elderly. This study was conducted to determine the level of discrimination of health workers and how health workers' attitudes were perceived by the elderly. The level of discrimination of health workers was determined by the "Fraboni Scale of Ageism" developed by Fraboni (1990) and the way elderly perceives the attitudes of health workers; was determined by the researcher, "The Scale of Perceiving the Attitudes of Healthcare Professionals by Elderly" (YASTA). Average age of participants; 37.96±9.12 in health workers and 71.96±6.54 in the elderly. According to the Fraboni Scale of Ageism total score were found to have higher levels of discrimination who are women, nuclear family members, nurses, employees in the state hospital and those who were not satisfied with their work. According to the total score of "The Scale of Perceiving the Attitudes of Healthcare Professionals by Elderly"; all older people perceive discrimination from the attitudes of the nurses. According to the total score of "The Scale of Perceiving the Attitudes of Healthcare Professionals by Elderly"; income status is above the hunger limit; without any disease; elderly individuals who could not easily reach health services were found to perceive discrimination from attitudes of physicians.
