Efficiency analysis in healthcare sector: The case of Marmara region

The health sector has a very crucial role for the development level of countries. Hospitals constitute the most important pillar of the sector. The main aim of the hospitals is to efficiently improve the patient satisfaction and to increase the service quality. In this context, the purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of the reforms in the health sector, to measure how effecient public and private hospitals use their resources, to see how much the hospitals have increased their efficiency over the years and to investigate the success of the investments, to provide information to the public and to make suggestions on how hospitals can increase their performance. Within the scope of this study, public and private hospitals affiliated by the Ministry of Health in the West Marmara region were examined. The data used in the study covers the 2012-2019 period and the Data Envelopment Analysis is employed to analyze the efficiency. According to our findings, it is seen that the efficiency values of Balıkesir and Tekirdag provinces are above "1" value. This result shows that public and private hospitals in the mentioned provinces are managed efficiently. For the provinces of Edirne, Canakkale, Kırklareli and Istanbul, the efficiency values are around "0,9". This result indicates that public and private hospitals are not managed efficiently in these cities.
