The investigation of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis-infectious pustuler vulvovaginitis (IBR/IPV) infection in healhty, subclinical and clinical mastitis diagnosed cows

Aim of this study was to investigate the role of Bovine Herpesvirus type 1 (BHV1) infections in subclinical and clinical mastitis events in Dairy enterprises. For this purpose blood and milk samples from every quarter were obtained from 269 cows. The number of sampled animals in 7 farms was between 4 and 118. Blood clots and milk samples were inoculated to cell cultures for virus isolation but all of the inoculums were found to be negative. DeLaval method was used for determine the Somatic Cell Counts (SCC) in milk samples, 44 quarter was blind and the milk samples not obtained. Total of 1032 quarter were measured. According to 100.000cell/mL average value, the animals were divided to three groups. Virus Neutralisation Test was applied to blood and serum samples (n=1.270). The proportion of BHV1 in blood samples were among 0 and 75% in farm basis, average value was 36.8% (99/269). Antibody titter showed ordinary decrease between 1/2 and 1/256. On the controlling milk samples, only 26.4% (265/1001) of the animals has been detected as seropositive. Using milk samples for serodiagnosis of BHV1 was found to be less sensitive comparing blood. According to SCC, out of 269 animals, 68 was categorised as healthy and 15 of them (22%) was found to be BHV1 positive. The biggest group (186) was the animals with subclinical mastitis, the proportion of the infection was found to be 40.9% (76/186). Clinical mastitis was diagnosed in 15 cows, 8 of them (53.3%) showed positivity for BHV1. The values of three groups were compared statistically and correlation was determined among both healthy and clinical and subclinical mastitis diagnosed cows.
