The language of the Ankara press in the transition from the sultanate to the republic (Hakimiyet-i Milliye and Yeni Gün newspapers)

After the Armistice of Mudros, when the victorious states started to invade Anatolia, regional resistances took place in the occupied areas, Kuva-yı Milliye forces and national societies were established. Under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, these regional resistances turned into a National Liberation Movement. The aim of the movement was expressed from the very beginning as liberating the captive sultan/ caliph and ensuring the independence of the nation within the borders of the National Pact (Misak-ı Milli). For this, it was considered necessary to unite around the sultan/caliph. However, in the following years of the National Struggle, a completely opposite path was followed. First of all, an independent government was established in Ankara, then the sultanate regime was abolished and finally the Republic was declared. The aim of this study is to reveal the changes in the ideology of the Ankara Government during the National Struggle period and the intellectual transformation on the road to the revolution through the press. For this purpose, since it is the semi-official publication of the Ankara Government, the newspapers Hakimiyet-i Milliye and Yeni Gün were deemed appropriate to be used as the main source, and each copy of these newspapers between 1920 and 1922 was carefully examined. In the study, which deals with prominent political events in the years examined, the changes that occur from year to year in the approaches of newspapers in the face of similar events are emphasized. The differences in attitude that are noticed from time to time between these two newspapers, which are the products of the same ideology, are also evaluated.
