Abstract (EN)

This study investigates the impact of variations in colour nuances on the sense of immersion in virtual reality (VR) environments. Using Unity 3D software, a virtual interior environment was developed for 40 participants to experience through VR headsets. They were introduced with two distinct colour nuances: red (S2060 - Y90R / RGB: 190 69 63) (warm colour) and blue (S2055 -B10G / RGB: 0 145 164) (cold colour). The study categorized virtual interior environments into dimensions of presence, including general presence, spatial presence, and the sense of involvement and realism, all of which contribute to the concept of immersion. Participants provided feedback on these dimensions through a questionnaire administered via VR controllers in virtual interior environments. Additionally, the study analyzed the impact of nuances in colour, such as light, dark, vivid, and muted, on the sense of immersion. The results indicate that participants reported a sense of immersion in both colour nuances for over half of the 12 questions, suggesting a comparable level of immersion across both colour nuances. Significant positive correlations were observed among different question groups aimed at measuring immersion, and with both colour nuances within the virtual interior environments. Notably, the study found that participants preferred darker nuance with red colour for the virtual interior environment, while they preferred vivid nuances (given the original colour) in the blue-coloured virtual interior environment. Overall, participants experienced a greater sense of immersion in the virtual interior with a red colour scheme. However, the study did not identify a significant difference between the red and blue colour nuances and the sense of immersion. This research highlights the significance of considering subtle colour variations when designing immersive VR environments and examines the complex relationship between colour nuances and a sense of immersion in a virtual interior environment in detail.
