The relation between word and image in art

The objective of this thesis is to analyse the relation between word and image in art, especially regarding the relation between literature and painting. This work evaluates the relation between word and image in art upon picture and poetry relation and the work evaluates it from antique to Modernism with the concept of Ut Pictura Poesis, which become a tradition. While evaluating this relation, some paintings and poems from Renaissance, romanticism and modernism periods are exemplified according to the scope of this work within the frame of Ut Pictura Poesis. Ut Pictura Poesis is an analogy between painting and literature that has been studied since antiquity. This study is a survey of that concept and some questions it has generated. The first part of study is a review, focusing on classical philosophy, of the contribution of the analogy to a definition of the arts as imitative or representative of the physical world. Starting from Renaissance, the artworks are treated as how they are produced conformable with the critical thinking and with the artistic comprehension of that period using the concept Ut Pictura Poesis, as for romanticism and modernism. In this work, the relation between word and image in modernism, studied according to modern poetry. Some examples from certain poems and paintings are offered and their lines of development is tried to be tracked. Important poems and paintings chosen from each period are examined with regard to how they appeared in the artistic comprehension of that period and in what way they contributed to Ut Pictura Poesis debate.
