Determination of industrial development effects on urban change in bursa city

Bursa, Turkey's fifth largest city, has developed in the field of industry with the decision to establish the first OIZ in 1960 and continues to do so. As a result of the development in the field of industry, the city has received a lot of immigration from the country. With the migrations, the need for housing arose in the city. In order to meet the housing need, urban settlement areas have expanded with new constructions. With the formation of new industrial areas, changes have occurred in the land cover. The city of Bursa was chosen as the study area in order to examine the changes in the land cover in line with the industrial development. In this context, the aim of this thesis study is to spatially examine the relationship between urban change and industry in the direction of industrial development in the city of Bursa. In the scope of the study, pre-industrial and post-industrial cities were investigated. It is focused on how the industry affected the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey. It has been researched how the city of Bursa, which was chosen as the study area, entered into a process of change with the industrial revolution. Urban planning at the city scale is mentioned respectively. The plans formed the basis for the analyzes made. The boundaries of the study area include Nilüfer, Osmangazi, Yıldırım, Gürsu and Kestel districts of Bursa. As the main material of the study, CORONA satellite image of 1979, SPOT satellite image of 2000, Rapid Eye satellite image of 2013 and Sentinel satellite image of 2021 were chosen. In order to achieve the most accurate result in satellite images, geometric correction was made. Object-based classification was made using e-Cognition software with geometrically corrected data. Classified maps were used to show industry and urban development and formed the basis for other analyses. In order to determine the distance of industrial areas to urban areas, distance analysis (euclidean distance) was performed using the Euclidean equation. Urban area square meters located close to industrial areas were calculated. The relationship between the change in urban areas and the population variable was tried to be examined. In this direction, population density maps were prepared using the Kernel method by reaching the populations of 2013 and 2021 on a neighborhood basis. Radar Chart charts were created to show the development of residential areas in the city. The spatial plans prepared during the urban development phase of Bursa were matched with the maps with object-based classification. The analyzes were examined, compared, and the effects of industry and population on urban change were mentioned.
