An analysis of graphic novels focusing on war and post-war themes, with the development of a creative practice project

Since the dawn of civilization, humanity has been driven by the need to articulate its experiences, discovering countless means of expression throughout history. The forms of these narratives have evolved through various media such as cave paintings, icons, written texts, and books. Wars and the tragedies they bring have played a critical role in transforming modes of cultural communication. As a unique storytelling medium that merges visual and textual elements, the graphic novel has become a compelling platform for interpreting the spirit of wartime and post-war periods. This study examines the formal characteristics and historical development of graphic novels, with a particular focus on how war and social upheaval are reflected in their narrative structures. Through an analysis of works depicting the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War, civil conflicts, and contemporary social movements, the research explores how deep traumas and collective memory are conveyed through the powerful visual language of graphic novels. This demonstrates that sequential art is not limited to entertainment narratives but can also serve as a meaningful and effective medium for addressing complex issues such as war. This study demonstrates that graphic novels, through the unique power of graphic narrative, serve as a significant source and method for academic analysis by expressing both individual and collective traumas.
