Abstract (EN)
The first census conducted in the Ottoman Empire in the modern sense was started by Mahmut II. The census in the Ottoman period started in H.1247/M.1831 in order to meet the military needs of the Asâkir-i Mansure-i Muhammediyye Army, which was established after the Janissary Council was removed. From these demographic books, we learn about the demographic structure of the regions, their occupations, the physical characteristics of the people, birth-death dates, and population movements. The census of Şavşat, which is the subject of the thesis, took place on the date of H.1251/M.1835. Separate books for Muslim, Non-Muslim and Coptic populations were kept in the population book subject to our research. In the notebook where only men were registered, first one was followed considering the head of household, then the age of the male population in the household. In this book, it is aimed to learn the history of the region by transcribing the documents related to Muslim, Non-Muslim and Coptic populations and to contribute to the studies to be carried out on the population books.
