Abstract (EN)

Serdivan was born as a new city on the hills in the eastern part of the Kocaeli Plateau and in the western extension of the Adapazarı Plain. Serdivan, the neighbor and municipality of Adapazarı, one of the central districts in Sakarya, has become a county in 2008. While its population was approximately 50 thousand in 2007, it reached 140 thousand in 2018. The establishment of a university in 1992 and the settlement of the ground due to the soundness of the hills after the 1999 earthquake have been effective in increasing the population. The center of the city, located in the North Anatolian Fault Zone, has concentrated on the south-north around streets in the eastern part of the hills and on the plain, the need for zoning to the west of the city has emerged. Located in Eastern Marmara, Serdivan interacts with many cities in and out of Sakarya with increasing educational activities and economic developments. It is a city which is likely to be affected by the development of Istanbul to the east. We hope that Serdivan, with its natural resources, history, culture and universities, has its own development, and will be a global city with its science-culture identity, and this identity will serve as an example for the world as a defender against the negative effects of industry and trade. The area has been studied in the scope of social geography with qualitative data collection methods such as the related literature analysis, observation, field interviews and photography. Key Words: Space, Serdivan, Science and Culture City, Sakarya, Istanbul, East Marmara, Earthquake, Social Geography.
