Political marriages in Seljuk-Abbâsî caliphate relations

Great Seljuk Empire, one of the greatest states of Turkic- Islamic history, is a great empire that flourished including the territory of Abbasid Khilafat State with its declination in the period which we call the second half of Abbasid Kliat State. The fact that Sunni Abbasid state became a puppet in the hands of Shia Buyid state during its declination period changed the course of history. The first known relationship began with the conquest of Nişabur by Seljuks between the Great Seljuk Empire, founded under the leadership of Selçuk Bey from Kınık Clan of Oghuzs and Abbasid Khilafat State, founded by those descended from Prophet Abbas, uncle of Prophet Muhammad. That Khalifa invited Tuğrul Bey to Baghdad and Tugrul Bey rescued Khalifa from the domination of Buyids caused Khalifa to give him the name the sultan of the East and the West. Thus, the efforts of Tugrul Bey to obtain the political authorities of Khalifa produced their first fruit. Khalifa nad Sultan Relationships that started with Tuğrul Bey started the political marriages between two dynasties thanks to the marriage of Hatice Arslan Hatun, niece of Tuğrul Bey, and Khalifa Kâim Biemrillâh. Then, political marriages became continual thanks to Tuğrul Bey's asking for and marrying the daughter of Khalifa. When it came to 1070, Sultan alp Arslan had his daughter marry Khalifa Muktedi. Again in 1100, Muhammad tapar had his sister marry Mustazhis Billah. The tradition went on and Sultan Sencer had his daughter marry Khalifa Müsterşid. In all these marriages, the attempts of Seljuks to get social, economic and religious advantages and their thought to ensure political alliance became effective as well as theri being sincere Muslims and efforts to get close to Khilafat. Political marriages in the name of determining interstate relationships from early ages to the Middle Ages and to Present Age are of importance in terms of indicating the philosophy of states, their relationships with one another and the meaning given to women.
