Structure and theme in Sema Kaygusuz's stories

Sema Kaygusuz, who started her literary career in the 1990s, is a prolific writer who produces works in many genres such as short stories, novels, plays and screenplays. Kaygusuz, who entered the world of literature with the genre of short stories, is among the remarkable young writers of Turkish literature, both with the form and content features of her works and the awards she received.This study aims to examine Sema Kaygusuz's storybooks named Ortadan Yarısından, Sandık Lekesi, Doyma Noktası, Esir Sözler Kuyusu and Karaduygun with the structural and thematic analysis method and to determine the place of the author in Turkish storytelling. Sema Kaygusuz, who writes stories based on characters and situations, touches on general human conditions and social issues based on the lives of ordinary people in her stories. She reaches an original and artistic language of discourse in terms of storytelling, by conveying her unique intellectual and conceptual world to her art through the story. Kaygusuz creates the structural features of her stories in parallel with her intellectual and literary sensitivities. The fictional characters in her stories, the narrator and focus preferences, her positioning of time and space, and finally the narrative techniques she uses are directly inspired by her way of feeling and thinking. In this respect, her fictional texts are shaped around themes such as gender inequality, the common destiny of nature and women, the loneliness of the modern individual and the insatiability of human beings. It is another important finding of the study, in which the author mostly bases her stories on the eco-feminist perspective she has. Kaygusuz's understanding of story allows her to be evaluated as a modernist writer in the field of Turkish storytelling.Keywords: Sema Kaygusuz, Story, structure, theme.
