Abstract (EN)

The Effects of Case-Based Learning Approach on The Elimination of Mısconceptions About the Subject of GeneticStudies put forward that genetic education is one of the most difficult issues to be taught and learn ,despite its growing importance . Teaching this difficult and abstract topic without using the research- oriented activities for students makes the meaningful learning hard and also increases the risk of misconceptions.Misconceptions created by students can go on till higher education level if they aren?t eliminated at primary level. The use of modern teaching methods to overcome existing problems and developing new teaching materials are stand out about the genetics issue that has misconceptions and learning problems of students at different educational levels. In this study the effects of case?based teaching materials on primary 8th grade students about the correction impacts of DNA, heredity and genetic code misconceptions and knowledge deficiency were investigated. The study was conducted with 40 students in Şebinkarahisar İstiklal Primary School in 2008-2009 academic year.To collect the research data, Genetic Knowledge Test and interview method were used. Genetic Knowledge Test was applied two times as pre and post. Findings derived from data collection tools, were used to interprate the primary 8th grade students? misconception impacts and knowledge deficiency about heritability,DNA, and genetic code. Results obtained by the Genetic Knowledge test application have shown that case-based learning method is effective on overcoming the misconception and knowledge deficiency of primary 8th grade students. Moreover, interview findings have revealed that students attitudes towards science and technology courses and their personal developments are improved.Key Words: Case-based Learning Method, Misconception, Heredity, DNA and Genetic Code, Science and Technology Education.
