Evaluation of patients WHO APPLY for septorhinoplasty in terms of body perception, disability, depression and social phobia

Background and aim: Aesthetic operations, especially facial aesthetic surgeries, are applications that have become popular in recent years. Another parameter that should be considered together with anatomical suitability when deciding on the applicability of this surgery is psychiatric suitability. In order to make a broader assessment to determine psychiatric suitability, we aimed to evaluate the body perception, disability, depression and social phobia in individuals who applied for septorhinoplasty surgery. Methods: Patients who applied to Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Hospital Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Clinic between 2019-2020 were included in the study. Fifty patients who underwent septorhinoplasty operation were included in the case group. 50 patients with any complaints other than nasal deformity and for whom no aesthetic surgery was planned were included in the control group. The study form consisting of sociodemographic data form, Beck Depression Scale, Body Image Scale, Functioning Assessment Short Test and Liebowitz Social Phobia Symptoms Scale was filled out by all volunteers. Results: When the applied scales were evaluated, no statistically significant relationship was found between the case and control group in terms of body image, disability, depression and social phobia. In the correlation analysis of scale results, it was observed that there was a negative moderate correlation between Beck Depression Scale and Body Image Scale, positive moderate correlation between Beck Depression Scale and Liebowitz Social Phobia Symptoms Scale and Beck Depression Scale and Brief Functioning Rating Scale, negative medium level correlation between Body Image Scale and Functioning Assessment Short Test. Conclusion: When patients who applied to the Otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic with a request for septorhinoplasty were compared with the control group, it was observed that there was no statistically significant difference in terms of body image, disability, depression and social phobia.
